Which end do I read from?

Start from the end with bands closest to the edge. The tolerance band is usually set slightly apart and is often gold or silver.

What does gold as a multiplier mean?

Gold as a multiplier means x0.1 and silver means x0.01, used for resistors below 10 ohms.
